SoftRead Game – Part B

This game is designed to help students who are just learning to read, to prepare them and to teach them reading.

*To teach what an opening sound is*

*To teach phonetical awareness,  how to combine sounds/ phonemes together to form syllables.*

*To introduce a symbol language for reading*

*To teach letter/sound recognition*

*To practice connecting sounds together*

*To learn what symbol represents what sound by hearing the sound*

*To learn what letter represents what sound by hearing the sound*

For each letter, there are three cards: one with the letter or 2- letter combination and two cards with two different pictures, representing the sound. For example, for the letter “d” the pictures are of a dog and a dolphin.
This allows for variations on the traditional memory game. During the game, players learn to build the connection between the sound and the visual form of the letter.

This game introduces the following letters:

r, s, v, w, j, y (with its two options), c (with its two options), g, qu, z, x, sh, ch, th (with its two options)

This is a new addition to the SoftRead books and supports the overall method. The pictures used in the game are the same as those used in the books, and thus can be used well in combination with the rest of the curriculum.

The illustrations are colourful and clear to attract the child’s attention and keep them involved in the game.

Options to play:

1. Symbol-symbol

2. Symbol-letter

3. Symbol-symbol- letter

It is possible just to match the two pictures to familiarize students with the sounds they represent. From there, students can play by matching one picture with the letter that makes its sound and for more advanced/matured/grown-up students, you can play with all three cards and students will need to find and match all three (see below for more detailed instructions). This allows for more advanced and strategic play more suitable for older students.
